Member of the Month – Susan Korfias
Susan Korfias is one of everyone’s favorite members at Lacon Fitness and Tan. She isn’t scared to try new things, get out of her comfort zone, or push her limits. Susan will be the first to introduce herself and welcome a new face at the gym. Encouraging, friendly, and fun are just a few words we use to describe Susan. Find out how Susan overcame her obstacles when she joined LFT.
A year and a half ago Susan decided to join Lacon Fitness and Tan although she had reservations, “I was so afraid of people making judgments about my weight and my inability to work out much. I could barely walk 20 minutes on the treadmill. If my friend/workout buddy couldn’t make it to the gym, I would skip going, which hindered my successful workouts.” Susan said. When she signed up at Lacon Fitness and Tan she soon realized that this gym was different. Susan says, “The support and encouragement the LFT family gives while leaving any judgment away from the gym has led me to believe everyone wants nothing but the best for me. That they do, the employees and members at Lacon Fitness and Tan have encouraged her while she participated in Squats for Soldiers, The Chocolate Mile and Exercise to Memphis. “Susan has inspired so many people by trying new things and giving it her all. I wish everyone wasn’t scared of trying, people would be in better places if they didn’t let the fear of failure hold them back, Susan is proof of this.” says the owner of Lacon Fitness and Tan, Amanda Barnett. In overcoming her fears and creating, achieving and making new goals, Susan has realized she has benefited both mentally and physically in health. She says, “I’m able to focus better, have more confidence in myself, and have learned how to make realistic goals. I am stronger than I’ve ever been.” Everyone at Lacon Fitness and Tan wants to congratulate her on her title of Member of the Month. We are extremely proud of her!
Lacon Fitness and Tan: How long have you been working out and how did you get into it?
Susan: About 1 1/2 years
LFT: Were there any reservations about getting started? Anything that held you back?
Susan: I was so afraid of people making judgements about my weight and my inability to work out much I could barely walk 20 minutes on the treadmill. If my friend/workout buddy couldn’t make it to the gym I would skip going, which hindered my successful workouts.
LFT: What are some of the benefits both physically and mentally that you gained since working out?
Susan: I’m able to focus better, have more confidence in myself, and have learned how to make realistic goals. I am stronger than I’ve ever been.
LFT: Cardio vs. Strength which is your favorite?
Susan: I prefer Strength training to build up muscle and gain strength.
LFT: What is your favorite exercise?
Susan: I started out despising planks but have grown to love that I can actually do them with great form. I felt the same about wall sits but thanks to outdoor bootcamp I find joy in knowing I am able to do them.
LFT: What is your least favorite exercise?
Susan: Burpees because I have to modify them and struggle with the modification. I will persevere!
LFT: When you aren’t working or at the gym, what do you like to do for fun?
Susan: I love cooking and baking as well as crafts. I’ve recently started bicycling outdoors for fun.
LFT: You have lost a lot of weight, can you tell us more about that.
Susan: I took a food sensitivity test at The Couri Center and found I have many foods I’m sensitive to which causes inflammation. After making lifestyle changes in my eating and adding exercise into my routine I found I felt much better and able to make exercising a priority.
LFT: We love your involvement in classes and events at LFT. Do you have a favorite event or class?
Susan: I absolutely love outdoor bootcamp and Functional Strength classes. The Halloween Workout was great! I love to participate in the fundraisers because they help me to make, obtain, and surpass my goals.
LFT: What has motivated you to stick with your exercise routine for as long as you have?
Susan: Beside weight loss I found that I can do so many things I haven’t been able to do for so many years. Gaining muscle and strength has helped me feel more confident which then encourages me to keep up with my exercise routine. This, however, hasn’t been done by myself. So many people have encouraged me to push myself to do more and have been my best cheerleaders.
LFT: What is your favorite thing about Lacon Fitness and Tan?
Susan: The support and encouragement the LFT family gives while leaving any judgement away from the gym has led me to believe everyone wants nothing but the best for me.
LFT: What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
Susan: I have two sons that are in their 30s.
LFT: What is your favorite “cheat food”?
Susan: Pizza once every couple of weeks.
LFT: How do you feel about your fitness journey ahead? Any goals that you would still like to achieve?
Susan:I have so much more to accomplish in my fitness journey but look forward to the challenge. I was happy to participate in The Chocolate Mile, Exercise to Memphis, and Squats for Soldiers. Each event helped me to continue to obtain a goal or surpass goals I made along the way and make new goals.
LFT: What advice do you have for other gym members?
Susan: Always have one or more goals and don’t be afraid to change them along the way. This only helps to strengthen your mind and body!
